The Government has announced that in 2019/2020 Schools can claim Sports Premium funding of up to £1,000 per child if they have up to 16 eligible pupils. Schools with 17 or more eligible pupils can receive £16,000 and an additional payment of £10 per pupil.
In order to qualify for School Sports Premium Funding, schools are expected to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of PE and sport on offer.
Inspired Schools have created unique and inspiring ideas including Inspired Playgrounds and Inspired 5 to help inspire children to be more active throughout the school day.
Inspired Schools will add to the sporting activities on offer and build capacity and capability within the school to ensure that improvements made now will benefit pupils joining the school in the future too.
In order to be eligible for Sports Premium Funding, there are 5 key indicators that schools should expect to see improvement across8.
1. The engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity
Inspired Playgrounds have developed the entire project around ensuring that children become more active. Installing an Inspired Playground will get pupils active for 30 minutes every school day and schools will be able to monitor activity levels. The key to this is using and training sports leaders, putting no further emphasis on teacher’s time.
2. The profile of PE and sport is raised across the school as a tool for whole-school improvement
Inspired Playgrounds support schools to create a culture whereby being physically active is rewarded through incentive packages. Inspired Playgrounds aim is to get children to WANT to be more physically active and by schools valuing PE and physical activity, it will ensure that this aim is achieved.
3. Increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport
Staff are supported and trained on how to use the markings, so they can be used in lessons, or during clubs. Inspired Playgrounds have a bank of lesson ideas, which are constantly being added to, and teachers have access to this.
4. Broader experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils
Inspired Playground’s markings provide schools with a vibrant approach to physical activity, challenging the children’s agility, speed, co-ordination, balance and other fundamental movement skills. The stations also have the capacity to introduce equipment to make them sport specific, adding variety and making them more challenging.
5. Increased participation in competitive sport
Inspired Playgrounds run cluster school festivals, promoting competition at partner schools, adding a competitive element when schools and individuals are competing against one another.
The guidelines state how schools can spend their funding. There are three key areas Inspired Playgrounds will impact your school:
1. Support and involve the least active children by providing targeted activities, and running or extending school sports and holiday clubs
Schools can specifically target less active children and put provisions in place to increase their activity levels using Inspired Playground’s markings. Moreover, by using the Inspired Playgrounds web app, schools will be able to identify these children and then evidence and quantify the increase in their activity levels.
2. Encourage pupils to take on leadership or volunteer roles that support sport and physical activity within the school
Sports leaders are an integral part of the Inspired Playgrounds project, following the training they are responsible for delivering the sessions and taking ownership of playtimes and lunchtimes, ensuring children are active during these periods of time. Moreover, this is incentivised to ensure that not only the participants are rewarded, but also the sports leaders when they deliver sessions.
3. Embed physical activity into the school day through active travel to and from school, active playgrounds and active teaching.
An ‘Inspired Playground’ is an active playground. Our aim is to create an active and healthy ethos in each of our schools. Achieving this, will ensure that the project is successful, and will encourage more children to be more active throughout the school day.
